　　I Cannot Do Both 　　One day while a friend was visiting Theodore Roosevelt(赛奥多尔•罗斯福) in the White House. TR’s young daughter Alice kept popping in and out of the office interrupting them.“Theodore,” the friend finally complained(抱怨)，“isn’t there anything you can do to control Alice?”TR said firmly：“I can do one of two things. I can be President of the United States or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both.” 　　In Prison 　　During World War Ⅱ Mrs Roosevelt went to visit a Baltimore prison with Maury Maverick of Texas, who was in charge of (负责，管理) prison industries and wanted her to see the salvage work(废物利用工作) being done there. In order to fit the trip into her schedule(时间表)，Mrs Roosevelt had to leave the White House very early that morning without informing(通知) her husband. On his way to the office that day，Roosevelt called to his wife’s secretary and asked where Eleanor was.“She is in prison, Mr President,” said the secretary.“I’m not surprised, ”said Roosevelt,“but what for?” 　　Dream 　　In 1958，Kennedy(肯尼迪)，Lyndon Johnson(林顿•约翰逊) and Stuart Symington were all Democrat(民主党的) aspirants(追求者) for the 1960 presidential nomination(总统提名) .Kennedy liked to tell the following story about the three of them.“Several nights ago,”he said,“I dreamed that the good Lord touched me on the shoulder and said,‘Don’t worry，you’ll be the Democratic Presidential nominee in 1960. What’s more, you’ll be elected.’I told Symington about my dream.‘Funny thing，’said Symington,‘I had exactly the same dream about myself.’We both told our dreams to Johnson, and he said,‘That’s funny. For the life of me, I can’t remember tapping either of you boys for the job.’”
