否定形式的肯定句的常见形式归纳
[摘要]在英语中,有些句子中有否定词,却表达的是肯定的含义。而有些 句子中没有否定词却表达的是否定的含义。像这类看似否定实则肯定或看似肯 定实则否定的句子往往令人难以捉摸。本文就否定形式的肯定句的一些常见形 式作了归纳。

在英语学习中,人们常会遇到一些难以捉摸的句子。例如,有的句子中有 否定词,却表达的是肯定的含义。而有些句子中没有否定词,却表达的是否定 的含义。像这样一些看似否定、实则肯定或看似肯定、实则否定的句子在翻译 时要特别注意。否则,将导致理解上的错误。为了便于大家学习,本文仅就看 似否定、实则肯定的句子的一些常见形式作以归纳。
一、反诘式问句(rhetorical question)
这种问句,不要求回答,只是要听者确认或证实说话人的看法。一般常常 是以否定的形式发问。如以下各例。
1. Can ’ t you speak more specifically?
难道不能再讲解详细一点吗?(应该讲解详细点。)
2. Aren ’ t you ashamed of yourself ?
你难道不为自己感到羞耻吗?(应该感到羞耻。)
这种问句可以用汉语“难道”这两个词来解释,但这并不能概括这一种问 句所蕴涵的一切意义。
二、nothing--*but, nobody-but, no(not) -"but, 相当于 raerely 或
only,
为“只不过,不外乎”的意思 意
如下面的例子:
1. He had nothing for supper but a little piece of cheese.
除了一小片奶酪外,他晚餐没啥吃的。
2. Nobody but Professor Zhang can do it.
只有张教授能做此事。
3. Nothing but socialism can save China.
只有社会主义能够救中国。
4. There is not a singlecar here but is home-made.
这里的汽车都是国产的。
值得注意的是3於1^呢匕1;与^^1^叩13的相反,形式肯定,意义否定。 如:I ,11 do anything but让&丨. 我决不做那事。
三、no(none)other than , not a little ^fl no Iess 认&11结构的句子
这类句子常常带有很强的肯定语气,往往翻译成汉语为“正是、简直就 是、不少于、不亚于。”如下面的例句。
1. It was no other than my old friend Johes.
他正是我的老朋友琼斯。
“It ? s none other than Tom! We thought you were in Africa ! Can it really be you ?,,
“None other!”
“这明明是汤姆啦!我们还以为你在非洲呢!真的会是你吗? ”
“一点不假!”
3. No less than 1000 people came.
到会的人不下于一千人。
4. It is no other than a blackmail to ask such a high price.
要这样的高价简直就是敲诈。
四、.can ’ {组成的短语
Can ’ t }^1卩情不自禁
Can ’ t„仏怎么„也不过分,越„越好
Can ’ t thank you 600呢11感激不尽
Can ’ t but如只好
Can ,t over-如怎么„也不过分
如下面的例句。
1.1 can ’ t but agree with you我只好同意你的意见了。
2. When we listen to the quips, we couldn’ t help laughing.
听相声时,我们情不自禁地笑了起来。
3. You can’ t praise him too }^8“7. 你怎么赞扬他都不嫌过分。
4.1 can ’ t thank you 加叩匕对你我真感激不尽。
5. You can never be too careful in 办^叫开车越小心越好。
6. The value of the information he has provided cannot be
overestimated.
他提供的情报的价值无论怎样估计也不算高。
值得一提的是,这种结构形式有时可以改变。但万变不离其宗,其中心意
义是,过分否定,导致肯定。抓住这一中心意义,可以举一反三,由此及彼。 如 cannot 可改用 impossible,not 可采用其变体 scarely,hardly, never 等。 如:
五、注意一些信念揣测动词
如 think,believe, expect, suppose, imagine,fancy, reckon, assume, feel, guess, 001^丨(161等。这些词要求宾语从句的叩纟移至前边的主句上 来,叫做转移否定,也就是将否定的部分,翻译成肯定的,而将肯定的部分翻 译成否定的,如:1. I don’ t suppose I shall be back until 8 o’ clock.
我想我八点前回不来。
2. He doesn’ t believe you are 3^@仏. 他认为你不对。
3.1 don ’ t fancy we can win easy victories.
我认为我们不会轻易取胜。
4.1 don ’ t think he was only playing a joke on rae just now.
我认为,刚才他决不是仅仅和我开个玩笑。
六、nothing like + 001^或〖6『仙(1表示“没有什么比得上„”
这里nothing 与like 连用不表示否定意义,而是为了突出名词或动名词所 要表达的意思。如以下例句。
1. There is nothing like leather for 3匕065. 用皮子做鞋再好没有了。 2. There is nothing like a holiday to make one feel rested.
什么也比不上假日能使人感到更舒适的了。
3. There is nothing like walking as a means of keeping fit.
任何保持健康的方法都比不上散步。
七、双重否定
也就是两个否定词并用,否定同一单词,或者一个否定词否定另一个否定 词。其否定意义,相互抵消而得到肯定的意义,也就是“否定之否定=肯定。” 这种用法在英语里使用很广,很频繁。如;
1. There is nothing unexpected about it.
一切都在预料之中。
2. There is no smoke without fire.
无风不起浪。
3. We can? t refuse him such a reasonable request.
对如此合理的要求,我们是无法拒绝的。
八、not +瞬间动词+以1^1或七111
come, stop, go, begin, leave, join, part, finish 等这些瞬间动词
与
110七"^抗11或^11连用时,翻译成肯定句的“直到„才”如:
1. She didn, t go to bed until after midnight.
她直到半夜后才睡觉。
2. Not until midnight did it stop snowing.
直到半夜雪才停。
九、no more than^Bnot more*"than, any more*"than 6¾^¾
此种结构常常采用其曲折的方式来表达“相等或相近”的意义,可翻译为 肯定句。如下面的例句:
1. It is no more than an empty talk.
那只不过是一种空谈。
2. No more than three people came to my class, unfortunately.
十、never, only, not, but, all, very 等加 too**-to 的形式
这类句型表达的不是否定的意义,而是肯定的意义,相当于“very ”特 别、非常的意思。
1. He was only too willing to accept the proposal.
他非常愿意接受那个建议。
2. He is not too old to do it.
他年岁不算高,仍可以做那件事。
十一、“一„就”的固定结构
No sooner-**than, hardly-when, scarecely*when ^,往往表达肯定的意 思。
1. No sooner said than (10)^.说到做到。
2. Hardly had we gathered in the wheat when it began to rain. 我们刚把小麦收完,就开始下起雨来了。
3. We had scarecely said that when they left.
我们刚说完他们就走了。
