After I had paid for my stamps and was about to leave, Alan explained the worried

expression on his face,

Alan and I had started to get to know each other about six months ago. He was a postman,

and he noticed that I had visited the post office five times in four weeks. The fifth time he told me

it wasn't normal for people to use the postal service that often, and I told him that I was normal.

Gradually, going to the post office became something I did every week not just to get stamps. It became my excuse to say hello to Alan, to catch up on how he was doing, to hear all about how fast his kids were growing up. Alan is my friend, so when I saw the worried expression on his face, I knew he wanted to talk about the situation he was facing.

It's obvious that the postal service is in trouble. Bad business decisions are thought to be one of the leading reasons. Another is that e-mail and other forms of communication are reducing the need for regular mail. In the end, it all comes down to one thing - most people don't send mail any more.

I asked where Alan lived that day before leaving the post office. I wanted to send him a letter telling him that, while most people might not send mail any more, I'm not part of them, and that I'm glad he's my friend.

This may not solve the problems of the postal service, but hopefully it will help erase that

worried expression from his face, even though just for a few minutes.

1. Alan was worried because he_______.

A. had got too many letters to send B. was facing a bad situation at home

C. had to work for extra hours D. might soon be out of work

2. What does the underlined word

A. hide B. remove C. understand D. read

3. Which of the following is a reason for the post office's trouble?

A. Poor decisions by managers.

B. The bad service it provides.

C. Fewer and fewer postmen in it.

D. People's communicating less than before.

4. The writer will write to Alan to_______.

A. tell him he is sorry at the news

B. give him best wishes

C. tell him he will continue to support him

D. thank him for his service

A festival for the Dead is held once a year in Japan. This festival is a cheerful occasion, for

on this day, the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welcomed by the living. As they are expected to be hungry after their long journey, food is laid out for them. Specially-made lanterns are hung outside each house to help the dead to find their way.

All night long, people dance and sing. In the early morning, the food that had been laid out

for the dead is thrown into the river or into the sea as it is considered unlucky for anyone living to eat it. In towns that are near the sea, the tiny lanterns which had been hung in the streets the night before, are placed into the water when the festival is over. Thousands of lanterns slowly drift out to sea guiding the dead on their return journey to the other world. This is a moving spectacle, for crowds of people stand on the shore watching the lanterns drifting away until they can be seen no

Autumn and winter are cold and flu(流感) seasons. Will the old advice about dressing

warmly help prevent a cold, or if you get sick, should you follow the old saying,

Doctor Nelson knows a lot about cold and flu seasons. Nelson says research may be just

starting to provide proofs (证明) for long-held beliefs. For example, scientists for years were against the idea that getting cold and wet might cause colds or flu. But recent studies have shown that cold temperatures cause stress on the body, and that stress can create something more likely to lead to viruses. So maybe it is really important to wear warmly before going outside.

And what about feeding a cold and starving a fever? Nelson says if you have a cold and are

hungry, you should eat. But a fever, especially a high one, suggests a more serious problem. He says people are usually not hungry when they have a high fever. Eating might even make a person sick. But drinking enough water is important. A fever easily makes the body lose water.

Finally, when should you treat a fever? Nelson says a fever should be treated if it stays at

40℃ or above for a day or more. A high temperature can damage(破坏) brain cells(细胞).The doctor also believes in treating a fever if it prevents a person from sleeping.

Medicine like aspirin, for example, can be used to reduce pain(痛苦) and fever. But aspirin

should not be given to children because it can cause serious problems.

Many of us don't pay much attention to the importance of eye care. It is said that if you take

care of your body, then you can surely be healthy. That is why our eyes should be given a lot of

care. Natural eye care should be put in a number one place.

There are several causes leading to poor eyesight like not enough food, genes (基因) and aging

(老化). Televisions, computers and reading are also the causes of having poor eyesight.

If you happen to work in front of the computer, it is best to take a break every once in a while.

Something dirty can cause redness and they will make you feel uncomfortable. It is bad for your

eyes, too. If this happens, the best way is to clean your eyes by using cold water. You must also

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the

students to develop their interests in many subjects. Open education asks students to be responsible for their own education. The open classroom may help them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules.

But many students may not do well in an open classroom. For some students, if there are too few rules, they will do little in school. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem of getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. A few rules will help them. The last point about open education is that some traditional teachers do not like it. Many teachers do not believe in open education.

You now know what open education is. Some of its good points and bad points have been explained. You may have your own opinion about open education. The writer thinks that open education is only a good idea. It may not work very well in a real class or school. The writer believes that most students, but of course not all students, want and need to have some rules. They

must be made to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find subjects that they have to study interesting. They would not study those subjects if they did not have to.
