StepⅠ Lead-in (5 minutes)
Ask some students to say something about Haydn/ Mozart/ Beethoven through showing their pictures.
T: Look at the pictures, have you heard them?...And how much do you know about them ? Now which of you would like to tell us something about them? Tell us as much as you can. S: …
T: Good! Now we will learn more about the three great composers. StepⅡ Scanning (5 minutes)
Deal with the post-reading questions.
1. Ask students to scan the text and discuss the following questions. They can then check with a partner.

Step Ⅲ Detailed - reading (25 minutes) Activity 1. Read Para 1-2 about Haydn Task 1. Important language points: (1) be known as: known by a lot of people.
e.g. Chen Long is known as a gongfu film star.
be known for: known by many people but it expresses reasons.
e.g. The small town is known for its honey peaches all over the country. The similar phrases: be famous as/for…
e.g. She was more famous as a writer than as a singer. He became internationally famous for his novels and poetry. (2) change…into…: to make sth form into another
e.g. With a wave of her magic wand, she changed the frog into a handsome prince. (3) Having worked there for 30 years, Haydn moved to London, where he was very
successful. = After hewas very successful.
Having + Ved: used as the adverbial of the time, it expressed the behavior happened before the subject sentence’s behavior.
e.g.:在这住了30年他已习惯了这里的生活。
= After he Task 2. Answer the following questions.
(1) How did Haydn change the form of symphonies? He made them longer and for a lager orchestra. (2) How long did he work in eastern Austria? For 30 years.

(1) talent n.

He had composed many pieces not only for orchestra, but also for harpsichord, piano and violin.
(2) What was Haydn’s evaluation of Mozart?

Put the students into groups and let them discuss the following questions. They should appoint a secretary to notes their ideas.
1. After you have learned the passage and known some information about the three great composers, which one would you like best?
Different people have different strengths. Haydn had no rich background but he studied hard and also had great achievements in music. Mozart was a musical talent and he could play many kinds of instruments. He was a big star and toured Europe giving concerts when he was still a teenager. Beethoven was a great composer. He became completely deaf, but he continued composing. He had a spirit of persistent, optimistic, confident and never give up.
2. What can you learn from Beethoven’s persistence? And what should we do when we come across a difficulty?
Life is not smooth sailing. We may come across a lot of difficulties. If we want to have some achievements in our life, we must have a spirit of persistent, optimistic, confident and never give up. Just like Beethoven, only if we try our best to overcome all the difficulties, we must be successful. Step Ⅴ Summary (4 minutes)
Through the introduction of the three great composers, we have learned more knowledge about them. What have you learned about the three great composers?
