四、阅读理解(18小题,每小题2分)

(一)

Two months ago, I went to Australia for a meeting with my workmate, Chris. We decided to drive across country to Brisbane after the meeting ended. The drive was going to take four days and most of it was across the desert. The first day was a lot of fun as we were excited and laughing at each other’s jokes. By the third day of driving in the desert, we began to get bored. We had been quiet for a few hours when Chris saw some kangaroos. We were both excited and decided to get a closer look. Chris drove very quickly to catch up with the kangaroos. We got closer and closer—too close —when we heard a loud BANG! Chris stopped the car and we got out.

Behind the car was a large kangaroo lying completely still on the ground. Chris went over to the kangaroo and put his base ball cap on its head. He took off his sunglasses and put them on the kangaroo and did the same with his jacket. Then, he put his arm around the kangaroo and told me to take a photo of them together. I took out my camera. While I was focusing the camera, I saw the kangaroo move. It suddenly woke up, and ran away before we could do anything. I started laughing but Chris looked very serious. He said his wallet was in the jacket. I started laughing even harder. I stopped laughing, however, when he said that our car keys were also in the jacket!

1. How long was the drive going to take according to their plan?

A. one day. B. Four days. C. Half a month. D. Two months.

2. Why did they hear a loud BANG?

A. Because something fell off the car.

B. Because the car knocked down a tree.

C. Because the car broke down on the way.

D. Because the car knocked down a kangaroo.

3. What can we get from this passage?

A. Chris saved the kangaroo’s life.

B. The meeting was held in Brisbane.

C. Chris thought the kangaroo was dead.

D. The writer took a photo of Chris and the kangaroo.

4. Which would be the best title for this passage?

A. An unusual experience B. My Australian meeting

C. On the way to Australia. D. A clever kangaroo

Sitting on a chair all day in school can make anyone want to move around. So, more and more teachers are letting students have a ball. By sitting on exercise balls instead of chairs, teachers find students' posture (姿势) and attention improve.

Dottie Pownall, a fifth-grade teacher in West Virginia, USA, has been using balls as chairs since December 2008. “The students love them”, she says. Pownall took a survey of her students. She found that 80% of the students thought sitting on the balls helped them pay more attention to what they were learning.

The teacher, Pisa Witt, felt so strongly about the use of balls as chairs, she started Witt Fitt. This company encourages the use of the balls. And the company educates not only teachers but also students on how to use them. “Our products are

used in 24 states, three provinces in Canada, Puerto Rico ('波多黎各) and Japan,” says Witt. “Research shows that sitting on the balls makes them sit up straighter. You can slouch (低头垂肩地坐) on a ball,” says Witt, “but it feels awful.” Because the students are moving, their blood (血液) increases. That carries more oxygen (氧气) to the brain (大脑), so the kids have more energy and can focus longer.

“Furthermore, they're fun.” says Pownali.

5. What will happen if a student sits on a chair all day in school? The student will _________.

A. pay more attention to his lessons B. be fun

C. like to move around D. sit up straighter

6. In how many countries are the balls used as the students' chairs?

A. Four. B. Three. C. Two. D. One.

7. Teachers choose balls instead of chairs because sitting on balls helps the kids___________.

A. improve the students' posture and attention B. slouch on the chairs

C. have fun D. Both A and C are correct answers.

8. Which is better for kids to study in class, sitting on a chair or sitting on a ball?

A. Sitting on a chair. B. Sitting on a ball.

C. They are the same. D. We don't know.

I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all. And what’s more, I couldn’t speak a word of the language. After having spent first day in the town center, I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I was sure that this was the better way of getting to know the strange city. I got on the first bus in the morning, rode on it for several stops, then got off and walked on. The first two hours passed happily enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that was pronounced badly.

I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. Then I met a policeman. I asked him at once. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed left and right and left again. I thanked him politely and began walking on.

About an hour passed and I found that the houses were getting fewer and green fields could be seen on either side of me. I had come all the way into the country.

The thing left for me to do was to find the nearest bus stop.

Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, politics, geography, physics, chemistry and mathematics. Others go to school to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in mathematics. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem. Great scientists before us didn’t get everything from school .Their teachers only showed them the way. Edison did not even finish primary school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of experiments. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. Above all, they knew how to use their brain.

14. People go to school to _______.

A. learn several subjects B. make a living

C. get an education D. to learn a skill

15. According to the passage, the most important thing a teacher should do is________.

A. to teach his students everything he knows

B. to know everything

C. to teach the students how to think

D. to teach the students how to study by themselves

16. To work out a math problem, you need to know ________.

A. only a certain formula B. how to memorize some facts

C. only some facts D. the method to work it out

17. Why were many scientists so successful?

A. They received good education. B. They were very clever.

C. They knew how to learn. D. They learned lots of facts and formulas.

18. How did great scientists study?

A. They read a lot of books and asked many questions while reading.

B. They did thousands of experiments.

C. They always worked hard and never wasted time.

D. All of the above.
